FEATURED July 2009

It’s true that I’m obsessed with fabric; that I collect so much of it that it’s getting hard to keep in one room.  It brings me such giddy joy that it naturally worked it’s way into my art.  From modern, handmade scarves to digital prints, fabric has been one of the biggest influences in my work and the common link that connects it all.  Throughout my life, I’ve been drawn to shapes that mirror geometry and the human form.  I think much can be said on viewing a chair’s design (stature, emotions, etc); not just it’s function.  I’m currently exploring chairs’ positions in space by themselves and in groupings as each image takes on a story of it’s own.  Psychology aside, these chairs make fabulous & affordable furniture!

To me, Sunday brunch is about my family.  It means listening to the pitter patter of feet as my children run through the house and jump into bed next to my husband & I.  After a few giggles and a knee to the stomach, their little hands pull us out of bed and into the kitchen where we’d have hot, blueberry & chocolate chip pancakes and share as much laughter & conversations as one of the only mornings-together could possibly hold.

My all time favorite designer would have to be Charles & Ray Eames.  Their architecture, chair designs, films, etc are very inspiring to me (along with many mid-century modern designers.)  As far as Sunday brunch dress designers go, the 2 that catch my eye are Mel en Stel (especially the ‘High Collar Dress,’ very stunning) and Kloset’s asymmetrical pieces.

My favorite dress would have to be my large-print, b/w houndstooth dress that comes right above my knees.  It’s made of the softest fabric ever, lined in hot pink, with the cutest, chunkiest buttons on the straps.  Not too tight, not too loose with big pockets.  I’ve been told many times before that I dress like my art (which is the best compliment in the world to me!) and this one definitely fits the bill.  Perfect.

Aside for everything above, I find inspiration in neighborhood walks and the photographs I take on them (I even created a landscape-based series.)  Also, many children’s book illustrations, music, thrift stores, painting, and work by Richard Diebenkorn and Charlie Harper (to name a few.)
