FEATURED January 2010
Lauren is a freelance photographer and illustrator who seeks whimsy in her work. Currently, she is interested in the personal classification systems which organize each individual’s perceptions.
“I draw and photograph to make up stories; it’s like playing dress-up, but on a page or behind a lens. I have always liked the idea of assuming another identity, even if only for a little while. Especially when I was younger, I was always trying to find ways to escape myself, or to be someone else – people I saw in movies, girls at school who I thought were cool, characters in books. “
“Sunday brunch means a warm hazy-cozy feeling and being with people you love. It also means dressing up in things which give you courage or make you grin: last night’s raccoon eyes, striped socks, big cashmere pullovers.”
“ There are many designers whom I admire. Miuccia Prada is brilliant. I have a weakness for Hannah MacGibbon and am quite fond of Tsumori Chisato. Shana Tabor of In God We Trust makes killer coats, frocks and jewelry.”
“I have too many favorite dresses to pick just one! There’s my striped tigerlily dress, my Alessandro Dell’Acqua sex bombe dress, and my velvet and lace winter- ragamuffin-urchin dress, by Lorraine Kirke of Geminola. My friend Stacey is a costume designer and has made me some amazing pieces, like a sparkle zombie muumuu and this funny faux-corduroy play frock that I hope to be receiving soon.”
“I am inspired by: Julio Cortázar, Yelena Yemchuck, Edward Gorey, rooftops, fairytales, freakshows, trees in winter, my friend Sophia’s photographs, Frances the badger, Maud Hart Lovelace, my sister.”
