FEATURED May 2009

Katy is an illustrator, exhibiting artist and fashion writer from Scotland who floats from land to land in a daydream cloud of words and pictures, making drawings which are “like candyfloss sticking to wind blown lips…”. In her illustrated world, a handful of girls dance from the pages of old stories and rest on fragile paper to gather their melancholy thoughts. Like parts of a whole they long for each other, for lost lovers, for a life forgotten;  heartbroken fragments skittered over time who play out their quiet stories in pretty dresses and windswept ribbons.

She thinks Sunday Brunch is a heavenly daydream of too much coffee, favourite people, hair tied in pretty ribbons and bows, sleepy laughs and papers as far as the eye can see.

She is always seduced by designers who create stories, characters and theatre and is very much in love with Erdem, Charles Anastase, Christopher Kane, Rodarte, Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Lover…Her favourite dress is palest periwinkle blue, lightest silk, drop-waisted and frilled and whispers tales of Parisian flappers, dancehalls by the sea and candlelit trees with every fragile step.

At the moment, her paper girls are inspired by Nabokov, great love stories, wistful girls in petticoats and furs, Victorian botanical illustrations, Lula magazine, woodland animals, The Belles of the Black Diamond Field, tragic heroines, Yelena Yemchuk, lonliness and longing, Rodarte, Egon Schiele, sequins, Tim Walker, dusty books, Henry Darger, old English houses and paper dolls…….
